* Swedish - Scania: stuttering in EMs

(The brand logo of Swedish truck maker Scania is seen on the bonnet of a lorry at a retailer in Ludwigsfelde outside Berlin, February 1, 2012)
Berlin,Germany -Reuters/2Space, by Thomas Peter -Feb 1st, 2012:  Truck maker Scania is preparing for an uncertain year by cutting more staff and delaying investments after truck orders softened in the second half of 2011 and its quarterly earnings undershot...  The heavy trucks sector is often seen as a barometer of global demand for capital goods – and after Sweden-based Scania became the first truckmaker to publish fourth-quarter results, the omens are not looking good. Particularly worrying was the company’s stuttering performance in emerging economies: fourth quarter order bookings slumped by 50 per cent in Asia (mainly in the Middle East) while also falling in Latin America... Precise figures for the Middle East are not revealed, but the sharp drop in fourth quarter Asian orders, which include the Middle East – from 3,866 in 2010, to just 1,361 in 2011 – highlights how demand for Scania’s trucks has been disrupted by uprisings in the region... Meanwhile, Latin American fourth quarter orders slipped fell 12 per cent over the year, disrupted by the transition to newer, more expensive trucks in Brazil... Truck deliveries for 2011 reached a record 72,120 units, but that’s primarily driven by strong first-half growth... The latest slowdown seems more than just a temporary setback, however. Scania looks like it’s preparing for a tough 2012. It said on Wednesday that around 1,900 temporary staff would not have their contracts extended, after cutting production by 10-15 per cent in November amid growing anxiety about the effect of the eurozone crisis...
