* PROGNOSIS - Replacement demand remains key truck-sales driver

New York,NY,USA -Penton Media/Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Feb 6, 2012: --The need to replace aging equipment – especially in the Class 8 segment – is what will keep truck sales strong not only for 2012 but well into 2013, according to analysts and OEMs... So far in 2012, North American orders for commercial trucks are strong, with heavy-duty Class 8 orders topping 25,200 units in January, while medium-duty Class 5-7 orders were just over 13,500 units for the same month, according to ACT...


* DC - Five Manufacturers on Track to Meet SuperTruck Goals

Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics, by Timothy Cama -6 Feb 2012: -- Five manufacturers are on their way toward meeting the Department of Energy’s goal of increasing a truck’s efficiency by 50% under the agency’s SuperTruck program... The manufacturers have until 2014 to meet the goal set by the program, which aims to encourage development of new, innovative, high-risk technologies to improve freight efficiency on heavy-duty trucks, said Roland Gravel, who oversees SuperTruck at DOE... Starting in 2009, DOE gave grants to Volvo Trucks North America, Daimler Trucks North America, Navistar Inc. and a partnership of engine maker Cummins Inc. and truck maker Peterbilt Motors Co. for each to develop a Class 8 truck that is 50% more efficient than an average 2009 truck... DOE asked grantees to attain 40% of their efficiency gains from engine improvements, with the remaining 60% coming from “other vehicle systems, which include aerodynamics, lightweighting and drivetrain friction reduction,”  Gravel said... The program costs $270 million in total, between DOE grants and matches from the manufacturers...

Greensboro,NC,USA -The Morning Call, by Tyrone Richardson -February 3, 2012: -- Mack Trucks produces all rigs at its Lower Macungie Township plant, produced 20,277 rigs in 2011, up 51 percent compared with 2010, the company reported Friday... The year's total included 2,426 rigs produced in December, Mack's strongest month of deliveries since December 2006... Mack officials have said that even though markets such as construction continue to be down in the sluggish economy, there is strong demand for highway rigs that pull trailers and are used in shipping... Like most truckmakers, Mack, a subsidiary of Sweden's Volvo AB, was hit hard in recent years by slowdowns in key industries, such as construction and shipping... Truckmakers have been showing signs of a rebound in the last two years as companies replace aging fleets, industry officials have said...


* Michigan - Ford won't bid to replace military Humvees

Dearborn,MICH,USA -Reuters -Feb 6, 2012: -- Ford Motor Co said on Monday it had decided not to participate in a new Pentagon competition to replace the U.S. military's fleet of workhorse Humvee vehicles...  Ford had assembled the team that reviewed a possible bid...  Industry executives had expressed concerns last year about the terms of the competition, prompting some speculation that companies could skip the competition altogether unless the Army backed off plans that would shift more risk to industry...  The Army is now looking for vehicles that cost around $250,000 each, below previous estimates that put the cost of each vehicle at well above $300,000...
