* Wiscosin - Oshkosh tries to buck criticism from Icahn. Oshkosh contract to turn profit sooner than expected

Oshkosh,WI,USA -The Journal Sentinel, by Rick Barrett -Jan. 9, 2012: -- Oshkosh Corp. said Monday it expects to report a profit on a key military contract earlier than expected, a move that comes only days after investor Carl Icahn criticized the truck maker for having lost money on the $3 billion deal... The announcement also follows criticisms from competitors that Oshkosh bid too low to get the contract and would never turn a profit... In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Oshkosh said its Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles line would be profitable in the quarter that ended Dec. 31, about three months ahead of what the company recently projected... The work, which involves building roughly 23,000 military trucks and trailers, has been crucial to sustaining 2,000 jobs at the truck maker. It also supports hundreds of jobs at Oshkosh suppliers, including companies in the Milwaukee area...


* Florida - Virtual Technician diagnostic system helping fleets reduce downtime

And about 10% of those have installed the optional Visibility package, which provides extensive data on stops, idle time, speed, location, path, fuel consumption, etc., essentially allowing smaller carriers to have access to the kind of reporting data large fleets use to drive efficiencies in their operations...  Virtual Technician is an onboard diagnostic system that provides real-time engine diagnostics, enabling drivers and fleet managers to evaluate what to do when the engine service light comes on in the truck...

* Florida - Daimler Trucks North America unveils addition of Detroit axles to powertrain portfolio
Miami,FLA,USA -Truck News (CAN), by Lou Smyrlis -Jan 11, 2012: -- When Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) launched the Detroit brand in October 2011, it envisioned a brand that stood for more than its well-known engine offerings. Today, at a special briefing for the business press, DTNA unveiled the first steps it has taken to expand the Detroit product to encompass additional powertrain components...  DTNA announced Detroit axles are now available to order for Freightliner Trucks, Western Star, Thomas Built Bus and Freightliner Custom Chassis vehicles. It marks the first time that the former Detroit Diesel brand has offered axles. Produced at the same facility as Detroit's engines, Detroit axles include a wide range of configuration options and compatibility with all braking systems offered by Daimler Trucks...
