* Tennessee - FedEx hiring 20,000; sees 12% hike in deliveries

New York,NY,USA -MarketWatch -24 Oct 2011: -- FedEx said Monday it'll hire 20,000 seasonal employees for the holiday season. On Dec. 12, the projected busiest day in company history, the company expects to move more than 17 million shipments, a 10% increase. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, FedEx estimates 260 million shipments, a 12% increase. FedEx said the impact of the increased volume was included in its earnings forecast issued in September...


* Texas - Frozen Food Express Selling Dry Vans, Tractors to Celadon

Dallas,TXS,USA -Transport Topics -20 Oct 2011: -- Frozen Food Express Industries said it will sell more than 400 dry vans and almost 300 tractors to truckload carrier Celadon Trucking Services... The Dallas-based refrigerated carrier said earlier this month it would restructure its dry van operations and dispose of 435 trailers and reduce its fleet by 290 tractors...


* Arkansas - USA Truck Loses $4.3 Million, Rejects Celadon Talks

Van Buren, Ark,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by William B. Cassidy -Oct 24, 2011:  --  Truckload carrier falls back into red, but will rely on new leaders to rebuild profit...   Truckload carrier USA Truck rejected merger talks with larger rival Celadon Group despite falling back into the red with a $4.3 million third-quarter loss...  The $386.9 million carrier’s quarterly revenue rose only 1.9 percent from a year ago to $102 million, compared with a 14.3 percent sales surge in the second quarter. USA Truck blamed softer than expected freight volumes and the cost of transitioning to a new operating system for its return to a net loss in the third quarter...  The Van Buren, Ark., company also said it had trouble finding drivers, which led to “a persistently high number of unmanned tractors” during the third quarter. About 10 percent of USA Truck’s tractors were empty in the third quarter, the company said, without improvement in the first two weeks of October...  Celadon bought a 6.3 percent share of USA Truck for $4.7 million Oct. 11, and asked to meet with the carrier’s board of directors. The board declined the offer...
