Wiki documents show how diplomats wield influence globally on carmakers' behalf


Detroit,MICH,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson/Washington Bureau -September 12. 2011: -- Secret diplomatic cables reveal the U.S. government'-s deep involvement in a spate of American automotive issues, including China's derailment of Hummer, Germany's anger over the scrapped sale of General Motors' Opel unit, and concern that massive Toyota recalls might impact Japanese-U.S. relations...  A Detroit News review of more than 100 auto-related communications, part of a WikiLeaks cache of more than 250,000 cables between U.S. embassies and Washington, peeks behind the curtain of the close relationship between Detroit automakers and the government. It also reveals how commerce intersects with global politics...   Along those lines, according to the cables, American diplomats helped settle a strike at a Ford-Mazda operation in Thailand; assisted GM in selling Chevys in Turkmenistan and Libya; and battled Venezuela over import limits...  By example: The cables reveal U.S. diplomats intervened or monitored a number of developments on behalf of Detroit-based GM...  Ford thanked the U.S. embassy saying it "is always very valuable to have the Thai government know that the U.S. government is giving an issue such as this some oversight" ...
