TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - Iowa, Urges veto of bill allowing heavier trucks
Des Moines,IO,USA -Radio Iowa, by O. Kay Henderson -April 8, 2010: -- The trucking industry is urging Governor Culver to veto a bill that would let heavier trucks drive on county roads in Iowa. Under current rules, trucks driving on a county road may weigh no more than 80,000 pounds. The bill would raise that limit to 96,000 pounds, if the truck is equipped with one or two more axles... Brenda Neville, president of the Iowa Motor Truck Association says: “This heavier equipment on these non-Interstate roads, which typically are the roads that are in the worst condition — especially after the winter we just had, we do have some concerns about the possibility of the damage these trucks could do to these non-Interstate roads and bridges”... The trucking association’s biggest complaint, though, is that these heavier trucks may be driven by someone who doesn’t have a commercial driver’s license if the truck is a farm vehicle. Neville says, that means someone could drive a huge truck on a gravel road or county blacktop without the proper training in how to handle that truck, the kind of training required for a commercial drivers license... * California - Ryder scores first-of-its-kind NGV truck project
San Bernardino,CAL,USA -Fleet Owner -Apr 8, 2010: -- Ryder System, Inc. has announced that the San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG) Board has selected Ryder as its “fleet partner” in a “groundbreaking” heavy-duty natural gas truck rental and leasing project in Southern California. According to Ryder, it will use $19.3 million in state and federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) funding secured by SANBAG to implement the project... This will mark the first time that natural gas trucks will be deployed into a large commercial truck rental and leasing operation, Ryder noted. As part of the project, Ryder said it will purchase more than 200 heavy-duty natural gas powered trucks. Both liquefied and compressed natural gas (LNG and CNG) on-board fuel storage systems will be used, depending on the specific type of truck purchased and the anticipated application... * Utah - Clean Truck Program to Provide APU Funding
Salt Lake City,UH,USA -The Associated Press reported/Transport Topics -9 April 2010: -- State and federal grants totaling $585,000 will help 15 trucking companies in Utah install auxiliary power units ... The units are meant to cut pollution by reducing idling, and they use about one-tenth of the fuel used during idling... The project will be funded by the Utah Clean Trucking Initiative, which is getting more than $350,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and more than $235,000 from the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, AP said...
