Lincoln,NEB,USA -Associated Press/Washington Examiner, by NATE JENKINS -19 March 2010: -- Nebraska lawmakers want to clamp down on construction companies that they say are labeling workers as independent contractors instead of employees to avoid paying taxes and benefits like workers' compensation... A bill that got first-round approval on Thursday would impose stiff fines against construction contractors and trucking companies that treat workers as independent contractors when they were in fact employees, as defined in the legislation. If the measure is approved, Nebraska would join about three dozen other states in cracking down on companies that try to trim payroll costs by illegally classifying workers as contractors... * New Jersey will allow rest period idling
Trenton,NJ,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Charlie Morasch -March 19, 2010: -- Trucks in New Jersey will be allowed to idle during rest periods after all... The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection was extending the idling exemption for rest periods. The news came through a letter from Bob Martin, acting commissioner for the state Department of Environmental Protection... Other exemptions for idling in New Jersey include to power mechanical operations such as lift gate pumps and cargo temperature; vehicles being serviced or repaired; motionless vehicles slowed by traffic congestion; and vehicles that have been stopped for three or more hours when temperatures are below 25 degrees, during which they’re allowed to idle for 15 minutes...Labels: rules and regulations
