ALTERNATIVE FUELS * USA - Ethanol Industry Looking for More Subsidies Through Increased Blend

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit Bureau -March 8, 2010: -- Brazil built 10 millionth flex-fuel vehicle; fueled by sugarcane-derived ethanol from industry not government subsidized... US taxpayers subsidizing inefficient corn-derived ethanol at almost $4B annually thru 45 cents / gal production subsidy. Farm lobby, agribusiness want more subsidies by way of increasing ethanol amount beyond 10% legally required to be blended into fuel... Ethanol roughly 33% less fuel efficient than gasoline; E85, higher blend of US-made ethanol, not competitive w/ gasoline. EPA in rule-making process on how it should calculate life-cycle effects of renewable fuels on air pollution... Protective tariffs effectively stop importation of ethanol that makes economic sense, but not political sense. Countries like Brazil who produce ethanol more efficiently than US are effectively blocked from selling it here... Production subsidy for ethanol applies to both domestic, imported ethanol; US charges importers tariff of 54 cents/gal... EPA responsible for revising, implementing regulations to ensure gasoline sold in US contains minimum renewable fuels volume... Volume of renewable fuel required to be blended into gasoline from 9B gallons in 2008 to 36B gallons by 2022... (Image: It's said that using biomass, cheap farm waste, could radically alter the economics of ethanol. The lower cost could end taxpayer subsidies, though the farm lobby holds powerful sway in the "pay to play" Washington scene)

Urging Senate Finance Committee to include language making algae-based fuels eligible for the cellulosic biofuel producer tax credit... Algenol Biofuels CEO said legislation vital for industry to realize full potential of ground-breaking technology... (Photo: a very close look at algae)
