* Sweden - Scania’s R-series named Truck of the Year



Stockholm,Sweden -Fleet Owner (USA), by Brian Straight -Nov 20, 2009: -- Scania revamped its R-series of trucks to add more distinctive exterior styling, and to increase productivity and fuel economy. Those changes have paid off, as the R-Series has been named the International Truck of the Year by the European trucking press... The vehicle, which bested the Volvo FH16 60, MAN’s TGL/TGM 46 and the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 23, debuted five years ago. Scania has delivered more than 200,000 of the trucks in that time... * China - A new route into

Hong Kong,China -Alibaba, by Sun Zhe -19 Nov 2009: -- Heavy truck manufacturers such as German-based Benz and Man are rolling into China... Man, the world's third largest heavy truck producer after Benz and Volvo, announced in middle October that it had acquired a 25 percent stake in Sinotruk, China's top heavy truck builder, for 560 million euros ($828 million)... It also said it would provide engine technology for Sinotruk to meet State IV emission standards, roughly equivalent to EU pollution caps, and to be enforced beginning in 2011... Shandong-based Sinotruk is eager to update its diesel engine technology to comply with the new law... Daimler, and Beijing-based truck maker Foton also inked an agreement to set up a joint venture in January 2010 to use the Benz engine and produce heavy trucks under the Foton brand. Co-investing 6.4 billion yuan ($937.4 million) each, each side will own 50 percent of the JV... Late September Jianghuai Auto Company (JAC), Central-China's Anhui-based truck maker, reached a framework agreement with NC2, a US-based heavy truck and diesel engine maker, to invest 2 billion yuan ($293 million) and provide cleaner engines for JAC's heavy trucks. JAC has been relying on Shandong-based Weifang Power for its engines... Technology sales are not really good business for foreign brands because the Chinese buyers will eventually become competitors, said Shangguan Zhoudong, a Beijing-based auto analyst... (Photo: CFP)


* South Africa - New range of vehicles to enter local market

Johannesburg,SA -Engineering News, by Eleanor Seggie -20 November 2009: -- Despite the current financial downturn, commercial vehicle company Iveco South Africa is experiencing good sales and also has a range of new vehicles that will enter the South African market in the future, Iveco South Africa MD, Eddy Chvatal, tells Engineering News... Iveco South Africa’s bus range is the company’s current best seller, with 277 units sold in 2008 and 320 sold this year. The company continues to experience good sales from its 3,5-t to 6,5-t Daily panel van range, as well as its heavy-duty, 480-hp Stralis range... Where new products are concerned, the company intends to distribute its new European Daily vehicles early next year... The Power Daily range, which was presented to the public at the Johannesburg International Motor Show, last year, is set for distribution in South Africa during the first quarter of 2010...
