Trucking Regulations * USA - Sting small companies
Livingston,MI,USA -DAILY PRESS & ARGUS/Livingston Daily, by Christopher Behnan -October 12, 2009: -- Kimm Stanek has run an independent landscaping and lawn-mowing business for more than 30 years, seamlessly transporting his equipment in his Ford trucks... Until this summer... Stanek, who runs Pine Valley Maintenance is one of many Livingston County small-business owners who said they haven't been made aware of commercial truck-driving operating regulations... Some say they've received tickets of $700 or more, while others have been allowed to correct the problems — such as not having personal medical cards, first-aid kits or chauffeur licenses — without fines... Fines in the hundreds of dollars would be a tough blow to small-business owners like Stanek, who went from having three employees to working alone when the economy soured... Stanek was apparently lucky... Meeting commercial driver maintenance guidelines can cost thousands of dollars per vehicle, Stanek added... Michigan follows federal motor-carrier guidelines, and in the past 20 years has seen major changes in load regulations, driver credentials and license requirements, said Sgt. Stephan C. Turner, a supervisor for the MSP Motor Carrier Division out of the Lansing and Brighton posts... (Photo by GILLIS BENEDICT/DAILY PRESS & ARGUS - Kimm Stanek of Pine Valley Maintenance had to get certification for his truck and trailer that transport landscaping equipment, requiring that he carry special supplies and secure his mowers with straps capable of holding items many times heavier than he carries. Stanek believes truck regulations are too stringent)

* HCRC, Sheriff Office partnership in motion
Huron County,Mich,USA -The Huron Daily Tribune, by STACY LANGLEY -October 12, 2009: -- A recent partnership between the Huron County Sheriff’s Office and the Huron County Road Commission is now under way with a certified motor carrier officer on the road to improve traffic safety and ensure the integrity of the county’s roadways... According to Hentschl, the county has had weigh master Larry Weber, whose sole duty has been to keep an eye on the weight of vehicles traveling Huron County roads. Weber’s job as weigh master has been just one of a number of road commission duties... The partnership between the two county entities now allows the county to have someone who is federally certified to handle and enforce weight issues as well as any other traffic safety issues as they relate to heavy-duty trucks or semi-tractor trailers...
