Chirinos -October 13, 2009: -- La Quinta Container Terminal, the magnet that port officials believe would bring rich cargoes from across the world, has been in the talk stage since the 1970s. On Tuesday, port commissioners approved several measures aimed at starting construction next year... Commissioners approved a partnership with the U.S. Corps of Engineers to begin work on a temporary dredge material placement area. The placement area is one of the moves necessary for the port to lengthen the channel through which the hoped-for cargoes would travel... The agreement would allow the corps to spend about $1.1 million in federal funds appropriated for the project earlier this year, said Frank Brogan, the port’s deputy port director of engineering, finance and administration...
