* Germany - Truck Maker's Profit Slides 95 Percent. Sales, orders slump with no turnaround in sight for MAN SE
Munich,Germany -The Journal of Commerce (USA), by Bruce Barnard -Jul 30, 2009: -- MAN SE rounded off a miserable reporting season for Europe’s truck makers by unveiling a 95 percent plunge in second quarter net profit amid plummeting sales and orders... The Munich-based truck and engineering group earned $30.8 million in the three months to June 30 against $618.8 million a year ago as sales slumped 20 percent to $4.3 billion. Operating profit fell 73 percent to $202 million... First half truck sales shrunk 57 percent to 21,296 units from 50,070 units and revenue was down 44 percent at $3.64 billion. Sales in Russia have virtually ground to a halt, MAN said... * Sweden - Volvo’s unique stability systems
Stockholm,Sweden -HGV (UK) -July 31, 2009: -- A new version Volvo's Electronic Stability Program (ESP) system that stabilises both rigid trucks and trailers, which can also handle 6×2 and 4×2 rigid trucks with one or more trailers, is being launched. Volvo’s new ESP system can handle everything from tractors to multi-trailer rigs. One major benefit of the new version is that it covers the majority of dangerous-goods vehicles, such as fuel tankers... Single-vehicle accidents in which the truck rolls over or drives off the road account for half of all truck accidents involving fatalities or severe injuries... Serious accidents of this type also bring about major economic consequences in the form of damage to trucks, trailers and cargo... The ESP system is controlled by a computer that receives information from a variety of sources, including the ABS brakes’ wheel sensors, the steering system and a gyroscope. Using this information the onboard computer can instantaneously determine if the truck is about to roll over or skid and responds. ESP responds with lightning speed by individually braking one or more wheels on the truck and trailer or, if necessary, the system can also lower engine revs... In a skid situation, the main response is individual wheel braking, with the system braking the wheel or wheels that offer the best potential for bringing the vehicle safely back on course...
