* USPS loses nearly $2 billion in fiscal second quarter
Washington,DC,USA -Logistics Management, by Jeff Berman -6 May 2009: -- Economic uncertainty continues to take a toll on the financial condition of the United States Postal Service (USPS), with today’s announcement that it suffered a net loss of $1.9 billion during its fiscal second quarter... USPS officials said that the recession, coupled with the diversion of letter mail to electronic alternatives, played a large role in the ongoing reduction of mail volume and revenue for the USPS, adding that the USPS will likely face a $1.5 billion cash shortfall by the end of the fiscal year... In 2008, the USPS lost $2.8 billion and in 2007 it lost $5.1 billion, and even with a planned $5.9 billion in savings, the USPS anticipates a loss of more than $6 billion in 2010. Mail volume, explained Postmaster General John Potter in a Congressional panel testimony in March, is expected to dip to 180 billion pieces by the end of September, a sharp decline from its peak of 213 billion pieces in 2006... * Covenant Transportation Group Announces First Quarter Financial and Operating Results
Chattanooga,TEN,USA -PRNewswire-FirstCall -April 28, 2009: -- Covenant Transportation Group, Inc. announced today financial and operating results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009... For the quarter, total revenue decreased 26.4%, to $133.8 million from $181.7 million in the same quarter of 2008. Freight revenue, which for these purposes excludes fuel surcharges, decreased 17.8%, to $122.1 million in the 2009 quarter from $148.6 million in the 2008 quarter. The Company measures freight revenue because management believes that fuel surcharges tend to be a volatile source of revenue and the removal of such surcharges affords a more consistent basis for comparing results of operations from period to period. The Company reported net loss of $5.5 million, or ($0.39) per basic and diluted share, in the first quarter of 2009 compared to a net loss of $7.8 million, or ($0.56) per basic and diluted share, for the first quarter of 2008...
* USA - Florida Proposal Would Double Registration Fee
Tallahasee,FL,USA -TruckingInfo -4 May 2009: -- The Florida Trucking Association reports that legislation in that state would double state registration fees on heavy vehicles, making Florida truck fees some of the highest in the country... According to the American Trucking Associations' State Laws Newsletter, under the bill, the existing fee of $989 a year for a truck weighing 72,000 pounds would rise to $1978...
