* Kenya - Heavy truck dealers hit by low sales as transport jobs shrink
Nairobi,Kenya -The Business Daily Africa, by Steve Mbogo -April 8, 2009: -- Kenya’s heavy duty trucks market is expected to slow down this year in line with shrinking economic activities, players in the industry said... Investors are banking on increasing demand for transit cargo from the port of Mombasa to Eastern Africa countries and inadequacies of the railway system to sustain the business... With the sales of the first two months of the year, standing at 121 heavy duty trucks (prime movers), according to statistics by the Kenya Motor Industry Association, players in the sector are hoping that the economy will pick up leading to more sales than previous years...(Photo: The haulage market has been experiencing robust business though the global economic slowdown is expected to affect this market)
* Kenya - Relief food supply hit by increase in freight charges
Nairobi,Kenya -The Business Daily Africa, by Ben Sanga -April 8, 2009: -- Transit cargo freight charges have gone up despite protests from Mombasa port feeder countries, a move that has been attributed to increased supply of relief food... The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) recently slackened rules stopping trucks with transit licences from transporting local cargo to enable the government and other relief supply agencies reach famine-stricken parts of the country quickly... Importers were up to the end of last year paying $ 4,000 dollars for a 40” container or $153.8 per tonne — rates which have gone up to $4, 800 to transport a 40 ft container by road between Mombasa and Kampala and $ 3,600 for a 20 ft container...
