* Germany - MAN to Review Spending After Truck Sales Tumble 50%

Munich,Germany -Bloomberg, by Andreas Cremer -April 3, 2009: -- MAN AG, Europe’s third-largest truckmaker, may deepen spending cuts after vehicle sales tumbled 50 percent in the first quarter and the company said it sees no evidence of a rebound in demand... MAN is suspending truck production for 70 days in the first half and may continue with shorter workweeks for the rest of the year to help weather the worst economic decline in decades. The CEO reiterated plans to shave 500 million euros ($671 million) from production and management costs... Truckmakers worldwide are eliminating thousands of jobs and idling plants as orders plunge. Munich-based MAN, which has cut posts in Poland, suffered 7,000 cancellations between October and December. European registrations of trucks and buses dropped a record 39 percent in February and fell 43 percent in Germany.


* Canada - All remaining employees at Chatham truckmaker given layoff notices

Chatham,ONT,CAN -The Canadian Press -3 April 2009: -- Layoff notices have gone out to all remaining employees at the Navistar truck plant in Chatham, Ont... The notices would take effect June 27, just three days before the company's current contract with the workers expires... In total, approximately 280 plant workers are being let go and 65 office employees... CAW national representative Joe McCabe says he's never seen anything like it, adding that the union still plans on trying to hammer out a new contract... Bargaining is expected to start in early May... The company already has had two round of layoffs this year involving close to 700 employees...
