* Pa. Trucking Company Cutting Driver Pay 8.9%
Altoona,PA,USA -WTAJ TV/Transport Topics -1 April 2009: -- Ward Transport and Logistics Corp. is cutting the pay of its drivers and hourly workers by 8.9%, Pennsylvania television station reported on its Web site Tuesday... The drivers were called to Ward’s Altoona, Pa., headquarters Monday night and told of the cuts, the station reported, citing drivers... The cuts will affect hundreds of drivers, who said they were not surprised by the cuts because business is down, WTAJ said...
* YRC Cuts 600 Employees

YRC Worldwide will fire 600 nonunion employees in the next several weeks as a result of its Yellow Transportation-Roadway integration and weak business volume brought on by the weak economy... Union workforce adjustments are ongoing in response to shipping volumes. Staff reductions are difficult, but reflect a necessary action to be more cost-effective and efficient.”... Eligible employees were offered early retirement, which included subsidized medical coverage until age 65, according to a YRC spokeswoman, and all affected employees will receive severance benefits...
* Saia Sets New Pay Cuts
Johns Creek,GA ,USA -Transport Topics -2 April 2009: -- Saia Inc. said Thursday it will take new cost-cutting measures to cope with the slow economy and reduced tonnage, including trimming its executives’ pay by 10% and its hourly, linehaul and salaried employees’ pay by 5%... The parent company of less-than-truckload carrier Saia Motor Freight Line said its LTL tonnage is down more than 7% in the first quarter... Saia, which also suspended its 401(k) matches for employees Feb. 1, said the cost-cutting measures would save it about $18 million annually...
