Teamsters, safety groups challenge hours-of-service rules
Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Magazine, by John Gallagher -Mar 16, 2009: -- After challenging Bush administration trucking hours-of-service rules several times, the Teamsters union and several safety advocacy groups are taking their fight to the more labor-friendly Obama administration... In a March 9 letter to Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, the Teamsters, Public Citizen, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, and the Truck Safety Coalition requested new regulations restricting the number of hours truck drivers can be on the road... The groups also asked the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington to review the latest rule, which took effect on Jan. 19 — the day before President Obama’s inauguration... The rate of fatalities involving large trucks and buses decreased between 2006 and 2007, though the number of fatalities increased by 72. The number of injuries involving large trucks also declined, while vehicle miles traveled increased... The American Trucking Associations, which has fought to keep the 11-hour driving rule as well as the 34-hour restart rule allowing drivers to begin their official workday after 34 hours’ rest, cites the FMCSA’s safety data in responding to the latest petition...
