* Mack, Volvo Offer DPF to Meet Calif. Rules

Greensboro.NC,USA -Transport Topics -16 Feb 2009: -- Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks North America said they are offering diesel particulate filters that can be retrofitted on older-model trucks so that they can be operated in compliance with new California emission requirements... The companies said the filters are designed to work with engines sold from 1996 through early 2002. A retrofit device is being developed for model year 2002-2006 trucks built to meet the emission standards that were in place at that time... Both companies said that dealers will have to install the DPFs...


* Test Drive Helps Kenworth Refine Its New Truck, Trailer Designs

Renton,Wash,USA -Transport Topics, by Bruce Harmon -Feb. 16, 2009: -- In the struggle to squeeze a few more miles out of each tank of fuel, truck makers are designing tractors with the aid of computer models and wind tunnels more generally used to tweak race cars or airplanes... The result is a generation of highly aerodynamic trucks that don’t seem to leave designers much more room to make further improvements, at least on the tractors. But manufacturers continue investigating ways to make trailers less of a drag...

* Kenworth Adds Anti-Siphon Device as Standard Feature on Class 8 Trucks

KIRKLAND,Wash,USA -Kenworth's P.R. -February 19, 2009: -- Kenworth Truck Company now offers a tamper-resistant, durable, metal anti-siphoning device as standard on all Kenworth Class 8 vehicles specified with round diesel fuel tanks... The anti-siphon device, which is located on the tank filler neck, features a robust tamper-resistant heavy metal barrier that is a quarter-inch thick. The design, however, does not slow down the refueling process...




* Navistar Urges Trucking to Back Gradual Phase-in of 2010 Regs


Warrenville,ILL,USA -Transport Topics, by Howard S. Abramson -Feb. 16, 2009: -- A top Navistar Inc. official said the company is pursuing its own solution to meet the 2010 U.S. emission standards, because it doesn’t believe the fuel savings claimed by competitors will justify the higher costs and more complicated systems associated with the new engines... Navistar — which will use exhaust gas recirculation in its new models — has proposed that the Environmental Protection Agency allow fleets to buy either 2007-compliant engines or 2010 models, to both provide costs savings during the recession and give fleets more time to test the new technologies... * Eaton to Provide Transmissions to Indian Truck Maker

Cleveland,OH,USA -Transport Topics -16 Feb 2009: -- Truck parts manufacturer Eaton Corp. said it has signed an agreement with India’s Tata Motors, that country’s largest automotive manufacturer, to provide heavy-duty truck transmissions through 2014... Eaton will supply the transmissions to Tata for use on its World Truck program in India and for the company’s global markets... Initial transmission production will take place at Eaton plants in Tczew, Poland, and Wuxi, China, with production moving to Pune, India, as volumes increase, Eaton said...
