* USA - Peterbilt to keep truck plant closed until end of year

Nashville,TENN,USA -The Tennessean, by G. Chambers Williams III -February 4, 2009: -- Already shut down due to a labor dispute with the United Auto Workers union, the Peterbilt truck factory in Madison will remain that way at least until the end of the year because of slow sales, the company said Wednesday“... Plant manager Larry Vessels said, sales of the large, over-the-road trucks like those made at the plant are down 70 percent from where they were two years ago... Peterbilt’s Denton, Texas, plant, which remains open, can handle demand for now, Vessels said. It is a non-union plant... Trucks have not been produced in Madison since the company locked out its 313 hourly workers represented by UAW Local 1832 on June 30... That came after the union declined to vote on a new contract offer submitted by Peterbilt. The previous five-year contract expired June 26...


* Sweden - Scania Share Decline May Result in Big Porsche Stake

Stockholm,Sweden -Bloomberg/The Financial Times (UK), by Alan Purkiss -Feb. 4, 2009: -- Porsche SE, a German maker of sports cars, may end up with a substantial stake in Swedish truckmaker Scania AB after Scania's share price dropped to 66.75 kronor yesterday, the Financial Times reported... A mandatory takeover offer by Porsche of 67.10 kronor ($8.17) a share, which was below the truckmaker's stock price at the time it was made and was rejected by Scania's board yesterday, expires next week, the newspaper said... Porsche was required by Swedish regulators to make the offer after it raised its holding in Volkswagen AG, which controls Scania, to more than 50 percent last month, the FT said...


* USA - GM in talks to (finally) sell commercial truck business

New York,NY,USA -The Daily Deal (subscription) -February 3, 2009: -- General Motors Corp.'s long, tortured effort to sell its medium-duty truck business might finally be nearing a conclusion as the automaker has reportedly stepped up talks with Isuzu Motors Ltd... A United Auto Workers official in Flint, Mich., has sent a letter to members informing them of talks between the automakers, saying that the deal would include a provision that would keep commercial truck production in Flint until the end of 2014. GM officials offered no comment...


* Germany - Truck market shrinks as higher tolls weigh

Frankfurt,Germany -Reuters, by Christiaan Hetzner & John Stonestreet -Feb 5, 2009: -- The German market for heavy trucks weighing 16 tonnes or more contracted by 27 percent in January while domestic production of all commercial vehicles nearly halved as the crisis affecting the industry worsened... According to data from German automotive industry association VDA, new registrations for heavy trucks fell to just 4,390 vehicles, in part also due to a hike in toll levies... Production of vans, buses and trucks in Germany decreased by 47 percent to 20,330 vehicles last month, while exports plunged 56 percent to 11,760 units -- the lowest January figure recorded since 1995 according to the VDA...
