TAX POLICY * USA - NDOT Studies Vehicle Weight, Usage Tax as Way to Replace Gas Tax
Carson City,Nevada,USA -The Nevada Appeal, by Geoff Dornan -28 Jan 2009: -- As it works to raise more money for road maintenance and construction, the Nevada Department of Transportation is looking at replacing the flat per-gallon state gasoline tax with a tax based on weight and vehicle miles traveled... Under the new system, vehicles would have to carry a sensor tracking mileage, location, and other data, which presents privacy issues that will have to be considered as part of the study, Director Susan Martinovich said. This system, like a similar system being considered in Oregon, would encourage usage of lighter, more efficient vehicles as well as driving shorter distances and at off-peak hours... Martinovich noted that none of the state General Fund goes toward the state highway budget, which is funded entirely by state and federal gas taxes, Department of Motor Vehicles fees, and service charges...
