INSURANCE * USA - Pay-as-you-drive Bill Is a Win-Win
Seattle,WASH,USA -The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, by Jason Bordoff & Pascal Noel -12 Feb 2009: -- According to Brookings Institution Policy Director Jason Bordoff and Research Analyst Pascal Noel, the proposed legislation in the Washington State Senate that would encourage insurers to offer pay-as-you-drive insurance policies, which gauge premiums on miles driven per year, is beneficial to the market... Consumers are eager to find savings by driving less to save on gasoline costs, but driving less could translate into greater savings if insurers begin offering pay-as-you-drive policies. Bordoff and Noel say that drivers under the current system are lumped together based upon their characteristics and safety records, which provides them with premiums at the same level regardless of how many miles they drive per year... The Brookings Institute's Hamilton Project reveals that pay-as-you-drive policies could save about 67 percent of households $270 on average per car in insurance premiums. However, some critics are concerned that these policies, which will require insurers to monitor drivers' mileage, will lead to privacy breaches...
