Fairbanks,AK,USA -The Fairbanks Daily News/Miner, by Jeff Richardson -February 12, 2009: -- The Dalton Highway — the road that links Fairbanks to the Prudhoe Bay oil fields — has always received attention for the rugged, remote mystique of the “haul road.” The men who drive it, not so much... Monica Bus wants to change that. On Wednesday, she unveiled a plaque at the Hilltop Truck Stop that memorializes many of the truckers who have worked the haul road during the last three decades... The men listed on the plaque all have different stories. Some died in crashes, others by suicide, cancer or simply old age... Bus has a special reason to feel close to the men who drive the 414-mile-long haul road.... Her husband, Matt, was a longtime trucker on the remote, narrow road. He died suddenly two summers ago after being stung by a wasp... The idea to memorialize the truckers has been around for about three years, said Susan Brooks, the assistant manager at Hilltop Truck Stop, where a tip jar had slowly filled with money for the effort. Bus adopted the cause about a month ago, and quickly raised the money from drivers and freight companies to purchase the plaques... Howard Thies, a Department of Transportation supervisor, used to supervise truckers on the Dalton. It’s a rugged road, he said, which leads to a special camaraderie among those who use it. When there’s an accident, blizzard or unexpected herd of caribou, CB radios hum with chatter.“They help each other out,” Thies said. “They work as a team”... “It’s sad that there are so many names on there,” Bus said, “But I can guarantee you that there are going to be stories galore"...
