TRUCKMAKERS' NEWS * USA - Cummins to cut work force by 500
Columbus,IN,USA -eTrucker -4 Dec 2008: -- Cummins Inc. announced today it will reduce its professional work force worldwide by at least 500 employees – or about 3.5 percent – by the end of 2008 as a result of the continued deterioration in the U.S. economy and many other key world markets... Cummins says the employee reductions will come from all parts of the company. To minimize employee layoffs, the company says it is offering a voluntary retirement package to certain employees in the United States...
* Navistar, OOIDA call for engine choice
Warrenville,Ill,USA -eTrucker, by Todd Dills -4 Dec 2008: -- The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association has called for a reevaluation of the Environmental Protection Agency 2010 cutoff point for new heavy-duty engine technology... The request came after publication of a study conducted by NERA Economic Consulting that concluded the price of trucks employing 2010 technology would be significantly higher. Given the slowing economy and the burden it’s put on many owner-operators and carriers, OOIDA says this price premium will be another hardship on all parties in the trucking industry... Navistar, which helped fund the NERA study, said it stands with OOIDA, labeling it a call for a choice...
* USA - Nissan to debut first commercial vehicle for U.S.
Farmington Hills,MI,USA -The Detroit News, by Scott Burgess -December 5, 2008: -- Nissan Motors Co. will introduce its first U.S. commercial vehicle in 2010, company officials said upon unveiling a concept work van Thursday at the automaker's Technical Center North America... The stretches the imagination of mobile work space but also shows Nissan's intent to move its bigger rigs into the United States and Canada to compete against Detroit's Big Three... Nissan will have its first commercial vehicle ready in 2010 as a 2011 model, and company officials said it could be similar to the concept vehicle unveiled at its design studio. The vehicle will be built in Canton, Miss. The Japanese automaker plans to introduce two more commercial vehicles by 2013...
