TRUCKING INDUSTRY NEWS * USA - DHL to lay off 9,500 workers

The shipping firm's job cuts include 300 at a distribution center in Riverside County

Los Angeles,CA,USA Times -The Los Angeles Times, by Ronald D. White and Dan Weikel -November 11, 2008: -- Struggling shipper DHL said Monday that it would close its 300-employee West Coast hub in Riverside County as it pulls out of the U.S. domestic shipping business, eliminating 9,500 jobs nationwide and closing most of its DHL Express service centers... Deutsche Post, the Bonn, Germany-based parent of DHL, blamed the move on heavy competition from United Parcel Service Inc. and FedEx Corp. as well as severe financial losses stemming from the weak U.S. economy... It follows 5,400 U.S. job cuts the company had made earlier this year and will leave DHL with 3,000 to 4,000 workers in its U.S. express business...


* USA - UPS Expanding U.K., German ‘Green’ Fleets

Atlanta,GA,USA -Transport Topics -10 Nov 2008: -- UPS Inc. Monday said it ordered 12 electric vehicles from British manufacturer Modec, which makes zero-emission delivery vans, for use in Germany and the United Kingdom... Six vehicles will be introduced into UPS’ UK fleet in February, including a vehicle that was used for testing, while the remaining six will operate in Germany, the company said in a statement... The U.K. vehicles will operate out of UPS’ Camden facility, which is in London’s low-emission zone and is the company’s central package facility in the capital...


* UPS to Open Healthcare Hub

The 150,000-square-foot facility in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will be capable of storing medical devices in addition to sensitive and perishable pharmaceutical and biotech products while augmenting a supply chain network for customers that provides timely delivery throughout the world...
