* Sweden - Volvo Trucks to cut 1,400 jobs in Sweden, Belgium
Stockholm,Sweden -AFP -1st Oct 2008: -- Volvo, one of the world's top heavy duty truck makers, said Tuesday it would cut 1,400 jobs in Belgium and Sweden due to declining demand for its lorries in Europe... "The company will initiate negotiations with the unions regarding staffing level cutbacks of approximately 1,400 employees at the company's plant in Ghent in Belgium and (in the southwestern town of) Gothenburg and (the northern town of) Umeaa in Sweden," Volvo Trucks said in a statement... Volvo will also implement a cost-cutting plan to counter the effect of lower sales and growing raw material costs, it added...
* USA - Alternative vehicles get their day

Gas prices north of $4 this summer have gotten the attention not only of consumers, but businesses as well. From hybrid diesel-electric delivery trucks to electric-assisted cargo tricycles, natural gas and hydrogen fuel-cell power plants to the minuscule Smart Car, new ways to get people and cargo where they need to go efficiently are springing up... The fourth annual AltWheels Fleet Day held Sept. 28 in Framingham, Mass., just west of Boston, put 45 alternative-powered vehicles on display, making it the largest alternative vehicle showcase on the East Coast. The 300 participants were triple the number of just a year ago, says event found Alison Sander. They included Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, Isuzu, and a host of aftermarket and specialized manufacturers. Listening to their pitches were corporate fleet managers, who are looking to save money on transportation costs as well as green-up their image... Smith Electric Vehicles, based in Britain, showed off a large delivery truck that’s all electric and boasts an estimated cost-per-mile of 11.5 cents. It powers up overnight (4 1/2 to 6 hours) off the electric grid. Made for use on urban streets, it has a range of 130-150 miles per charge and a top speed of 50 m.p.h. * Russia - GAZ Group plans new $287 mln car plant
Moscow,Russia -Reuters, by Anton Doroshev; Maria Kiselyova; and Greg Mahlich -Sep 30, 2008: -- Russian auto maker GAZ Group GAZA.MM said on Tuesday it plans to invest 200 million euros ($287 million) in the construction of a large plant which will start production in 2010... The plant, which is to be located in Nizhny Novgorod in central Russia, will produce 300,000 cars a year, including 45,000 Maxus light commecrial trucks and 255,000 GAZelle trucks, Oleg Gamov, a spokesman for GAZ Group, said... GAZ is the second-largest Russian car maker after AvtoVAZ and is controlled by billionaire Oleg Deripaska... In 2007 it sold 210,400 light commercial trucks. The company's revenues were approximately $6 billion in 2007...
* Belarus - MAZ-MAN rolls out all-wheel-drive trucks
Minsk,Belarus -The National Legal Internet Portal -29 Sept 2008: -- Joint venture MAZ-MAN has started manufacturing all-wheel-drive trucks MAZ-6317... A MAZ-6317 truck has been recently assembled using components supplied by Minsk Automobile Plant. MAZ-MAN plans to assemble 116 suck trucks by the end of the year... Over the last few years MAZ-MAN has essentially increased the number of vehicles available. The number includes trucks and frontal loaders of a proprietary design...
