USA -Freight Teamsters - 29 Sept 2008: -- Total goods carried by trucks in the U.S. fell in August compared with the previous month, marking the largest month-to-month drop since March, a major industry trade group said... The American Trucking Associations said late Wednesday its seasonally adjusted tonnage index, which measures the weight of freight hauled by U.S. truckers based on membership surveys, fell 1.6 percent in July... ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello said the downward trend indicates that the U.S. economy will fall into a "mild" recession later this year and early next year...


* Arkansas proposals would open roads to mini-trucks

ARK,USA -Land Line Magazine -October 1, 2008: -- With cost of fuel still forcing drivers to find ways to save money, more consumers are looking for vehicles that are smaller and smaller. As a result, more truckers soon could be sharing certain roads with the increasingly popular mini-truck... In Arkansas, a legislative panel is considering two draft bills by Sen. Denny Altes, R-Fort Smith, and Rep. Scott Sullivan, D-De Queen, which would open roadways in the state for the vehicles... The mini-trucks can travel at speeds as fast as 60 mph. They typically have a price tag between $3,000 and $13,000, depending on their age and condition...


* Trucking firm to eliminate jobs in Topeka

Topeka,KAN,USA -AP/Nebraska TV -September 30, 2008: -- The slumping economy is prompting a major trucking firm to shut down an administrative center in Topeka... YRC Worldwide plans to close the center by the end of the year. The center has about 90 employees who handle billing and bill collecting... Company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bill Zollars tells The Topeka Capital-Journal that the volumes of business going through the Topeka office have dropped 20% from a year ago...
