POINTS of VIEW * USA & Canada - Trucking analyst expects economic turnaround in late 2009

Halifax,Ont,CAN -Truck News, by James Menzies -24 Oct 2008<: -- Ray Mawhinney, chair of RBC Asset Management, delivered a refreshingly optimistic overview of the US economy and its trucking industry during the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association's first ever International Transportation Summit here this week... The overall verdict? Mawhinney said he expects the US to emerge from a recession in late 2009, paving the way for a better 2010... "Lots of people think it's going to be a longer term recession," acknowledged Mawhinney. "Our feeling is that the federal banks have acted forcefully and quickly, and they will get to the point where they can actually get credit moving again and get confidence restored for an improving trend in the last half of 2009"...

* USA - Trucking Forecast Revised Downward

Washington,DC,USA -Traffic World, by Thomas L. Gallagher -24 Oct 2008: -- The outlook for trucking is weak and getting weaker, said a prominent transportation analyst, predicting a recession through 2009... The October 24th issue of FTR Associates' North American Commercial Truck and Trailer Outlook report reflects a significant reduction in 2009 vehicle equipment forecasts. FTR now expects approximately 150,000 factory shipments of Class 8 trucks and less than 100,000 trailers... FTR expects the poor economic environment for trucking to depress freight demand significantly throughout next year. A recession is unavoidable, the firm said, with total GDP to fall 0.2 percent in 2009... With limited freight to haul, demand for transportation equipment is already soft and is expected to remain weak over the next several quarters. FTR sees no noticeable increase in freight demand until the middle of 2010...
