GREEN NEWS * USA - California Legislature OKs bill intended to curb sprawl, emissions
Sacramento,CAL,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Keith Goble -September 17, 2008: -- With the intention of slowing the increase in emissions, the California Legislature has approved a bill that would implement the nation’s most comprehensive effort to reduce sprawl... Sponsored by Sen. Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, the measure would tie greenhouse gas reduction to transportation funding and regional land-use planning... The first-of-its-kind plan is intended to reduce global warming emissions by drawing up regional plans to reduce miles driven by commuters. Also, most transportation funding would be routed solely to “smart growth” projects... To entice cities and counties to adopt a “smart growth” plan, the only developments that would be eligible for shares of state transportation money would be those that are built near transit or clustered near current developments...
