Diesel Controls * USA - Could hurt truckers
Fontana,CAL,USA -Daily Bulletin, by Daniel Del Muro(*) -7 Sept 2008: -- ... The ARB recently released the draft of a new emissions regulation that will be taken up by the board this December. This new regulation would require that every diesel truck or bus operating in California meet a stringent new emissions standard... We just spent more than $400,000 for three new trucks, but under this new regulation we would still be required to replace or retrofit almost half of our small fleet at a cost of nearly $1 million. We cannot afford this expenditure. Some have suggested that we apply for state funds, but because we haul out of state, we are ineligible for any of the very limited state bond funds that are available... Like many small businesses across California, we are already struggling with the high price of diesel fuel and other costs, like providing health care for our employees. We provide a fair wage for our drivers and even offer a 401k plan. So far, we have resisted any staff cutbacks, but with these new regulations that could cost us $1 million, combined with the downturn in the economy, something will have to give... This will mean that jobs will be lost and you and I will be paying more for household goods... I live in this community with my friends and family and want to continue to do my part to clean up the environment, but I'm very concerned that this new state regulation with such a rigid implementation timeline will have a devastating impact on small businesses like our small trucking company...
