* Sweden - Scania Receives Large Truck Order in Brazil
Stockholm,Sweden -MarketWatch/Business Wire -Sep 10, 2008: -- Scania is delivering 260 tipper trucks to the Brazilian company Odebrecht... It is the largest single truck order in the 51-year history of Scania Brasil... Odebrecht is Latin America's largest engineering and construction company... Delivery of the trucks has begun and will continue until the end of the year... All the vehicles are Scania P 420 model three-axle trucks with 420 hp engines. All trucks will be supplied with on-board computers for real-time vehicle monitoring and transport planning. One hundred of the trucks will be equipped with the computer-aided Scania Opticruise gearchanging system...
* Ireland - Volvo Trucks to Temporarily Close Dublin Plant
Dublin,Ireland -All About Trucks -8 Set 2008: -- The second largest bus and truck manufacturer recently announced that they will be implementing a short-term work break at their Dublin, Ireland truck assembly plant. The said work break will span three weeks as the company makes adjustments. The announcement came from Volvo Trucks’ spokesman Jim McNamara... It has been reported that about 1,000 jobs will be cut by the Swedish company. This number though was reduced to 900 shortly. The said workforce reduction step is made due to lowered sales and increased production costs. The increase in the cost of production is the result of harsher emission standards set by governments around the world. This means that the company needs to pour in money in the development and production of components that will enable their trucks and buses to meet emission standards...
* Renault to cut 4,000 jobs, citing slow sales
Paris,France -The Detroit News -8 Sept 2008: -- French automaker Renault SA announced 4,000 job cuts Tuesday, prompting protests from unions and an appeal to President Nicolas Sarkozy to intervene... Renault, which had predicted lower sales volumes in July, submitted a document to union leaders saying the company is having difficulty meeting its targets for operating margins this year... The car maker called the cutbacks necessary to meet productivity targets to keep the company competitive in a worsening economic environment, and to avoid falling victim to consolidation...
