Long Beach,CA,USA -The Gazette Newspapers, by Kurt Helin -13 Aug 2008: -- The vast majority of truck drivers moving cargo in and out of the ports right now are independent owner/operators. They are hired by companies and paid to make a specific haul... Like everyone from computer technicians to accountants who have stepped out on their own as an independent contractor, finding affordable health insurance can be a challenge... To help, the Port of Long Beach last week announced its new Healthy Drivers Program, part of the Clean Truck Program at the port... Said Richard Steinke, port’s executive director, “With this service, we provide drivers an easy way to find information that gives them the opportunity to enroll in a number of affordable health plans.” ... Port officials researched various health care options and have staff that can help guide the drivers through what can seem a complicated process... There are an estimated 16,000 trucks making a total of about 30,000 truck trips a day in and out of the two ports...
