American Driving * USA - Reaches Eighth Month of Steady Decline
The latest figures from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) show a continued decline in miles driven
Washington,DC,USA -Federal Highway Administration Release -13 Aug 2008: -- A continued decline in the number of miles driven on U.S. roadways is translating into decreased revenue for the Highway Trust Fund and necessitates a revampment of the funding structure for improving the U.S. surface transportation network, says U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters... Since last November, 53.2 billion fewer miles have been logged as of the end of June when compared to the same span during the previous year, topping the total decline of 49.3 billion miles experienced in all of the 1970s. The decline is especially marked in rural areas. "We can't afford to continue pinning our transportation network's future to the gas tax," says Peters. "Advances in higher fuel-efficiency vehicles and alternative fuels are making the gas tax an even less sustainable support for funding roads, bridges and transit systems"... Data was gathered by FHWA through a network of more than 4,000 automatic traffic recorders operated by state highway agencies.
