Believe it or not * Louxembourg/Europe - There’s a benefit to high gasoline prices

Louxembourg -The New Europe -2 June 2008: -- Environmentalists say the soaring costs mean drivers are being pushed more toward eco-friendly “Green” cars that emit fewer emissions and get higher gas mileage, even if they cost more initially. Auto manufacturers are also driving themselves toward more fuel-efficient cars and hybrid cars, like the Toyota Prius, which can also use electric power... And while Europeans have long been used to high gasoline prices and modified their driving habits toward smaller cars, and drive shorter distances than in the US, americans are scrambling toward more fuel-efficient and smaller cars too. A survey in the US state of Illinois found that more people are willing to pay more to drive green. The poll found that 89 percent of respondents supported legislation to stiffen fuel-efficiency standards even if it meant paying USD 1,000 more for a car, provided they would make up the difference within two years by using less gas. The poll came before a pending vote in the Illinois House over whether to tighten standards on gas consumption for vehicles...
