USA -Machete 408, by Reed Fujii -May 06, 2008: -- For the second time in four years, hundreds of independent truck drivers went on strike Monday against companies that hire them to haul cargo containers out of railroad terminals near Stockton... Ajit Gill of Stockton, a truck owner-operator and a spokesman for strikers, said the truckers face fuel costs that have more than doubled since 2004, as well as higher costs for insurance, stiffer inspection fees and more. But freight rates have not kept pace... Currently, the fuel surcharge should be 55 percent, but often drivers don’t get that, or something less, he said... Instead, what the strikers want is for companies to simply double the base rates and forget the surcharges...

Oakland,CAL,USA -MassLogics -7 May 2008: -- At the Union Pacific Rail Terminal truckers have had enough. Trucks are pulling over in solidarity to protest the rising fuel costs they must shoulder. Most of the truck drivers are only being compensated for 12% of their fuel costs. “We want to work.” Said many of the owner-operator drivers, but they can’t afford to when their fuel costs exceed the fees companies pay them to haul the loads... Protesters yell and jeer at trucks passing by. Many fellow truck drivers abruptly stop their rigs and join them. Truckers in surrounding locations are also pulling over to support the cause... Truck drivers cannot shoulder the impossible burden of endlessly rising fuel costs...
* Canada - Dump trucks plan rolling protests through GTA
Toronto,ONT,CAN -The Toronto Star/Truck News -7 May 2008: -- GTA dump truck drivers will slow traffic on busy routes around the city Thursday to protest a number of issues, including fuel prices, rates and poor working conditions, according to a report... About 150 trucks, owned by members of the Ontario Dump Truck Association, are expected to take part in the rolling protests which will begin after the morning rush hour. Derry Rd., Hwy. 410, Hwy. 401, the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway are expected to be affected, the Star reports...
