TRUCKERS' PROTEST * Canada - Dump trucks stuck in park as drivers continue protest
Hundreds of rigs idled in Mississauga lot as owners take quest for better pay and safer loads to minister
Toronto,Ontario, Canada -The Toronto Star, by Jim Wilkes -May 12, 2008: -- Life at Camp Dump Truck is "pretty depressing," says driver Ashley Bembridge... He and hundreds of colleagues who parked their rigs have vowed not to haul dirt across Greater Toronto until they win more money, better working conditions and a promise they won't have to take on overweight loads... "We're between a rock and a hard place," said Bembridge, a 48-year-old father of two who gave up a high-paying factory job five years ago and invested $160,000 in his own dump truck. "Every month you work, you have to make a choice whether to pay your mortgage or fix the brakes on your truck. Most guys pay their mortgage. You can't go five years without a raise and still be able to maintain your truck with costs going up so high. You can't make money, and nobody listens to us."... Hundreds of trucks remained in a lot at Dixie and Derry Rds. in Mississauga yesterday, where some drivers commiserate under a huge vinyl tent or wander over to a nearby Sikh temple for prayers... Many of these trucks rolled out in a 2 1/2-hour protest along some of Toronto's busiest highways last week, to call attention to what Harsimran Gill of the Ontario Dump Truck Association called "inhumane" conditions endured by its 700 members, who represent about 70 per cent of the 1,000 or so dump trucks in Greater Toronto...
