TRUCKERS' STRIKE * USA - OTHER VOICES * Trucks keep rolling... for now

A small protest by truckers over fuel prices has limited impact as relatively few park their rigs. But companies see driver shortage ahead from rising diesel costs

New York,NY,USA -CNNMoney, by Chris Isidore -April 1, 2008: 2:49 PM EDT: -- Despite a threatened strike by some independent truck drivers, many trucks were still on the road Tuesday. But for how much longer?... Several industry experts predict problems ahead finding drivers because of higher fuel costs... Some independent truck drivers, known as owner-operators since they own their trucks, had talked about not working Tuesday to protest the rise in diesel prices... And there were reports Tuesday of truckers on the New Jersey Turnpike snarling traffic by driving at only 20 miles per hour as a way to protest high gas prices... But officials with the Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association, which has about 160,000 members nationwide, as well as the Truckload Carriers Association, which represents trucking companies that use owner-operators, both said they had reports of only sporadic shutdowns by drivers... But he also agrees fuel prices are causing problems for both independent drivers as well as trucking companies. He thinks the rise in diesel costs will cause many smaller trucking companies to go out of business...

Lancaster,CA,USA -The Lancaster New Era -Apr 01, 2008, 13:39 EST: -- Despite calls from some independent truckers for a nationwide shutdown, it remained unclear how many drivers were parking their rigs today to protest the rising cost of diesel fuel... Barry Wertz, the safety director for Kinard Trucking Inc., which is based in York and has a terminal in Lancaster, said the five independent truckers who work with the firm were on the roads today...

Austin,TX,USA -CNN/news8austin -1 April 2008, 10:29 AM: -- Word of an independent trucker strike is rumbling across the country's highways... There are about 500,000 independent drivers nationwide, but it's hard to say how many drivers will actually join in this loosely organized shutdown and turn off their engines for a whole week... "If we shut down for five days, six days, we're making a statement that we're not going to put up with prices like that unless our pay starts to increase," Ron Jones, an independent truck driver said... * Arkansas Truckers Hanging Up Their Keys?

ARK,USA -Today STHV, by Ashley Blackstone -1 April 2008 1:16:55 PM: -- The nation's independent truckers are parking their rigs today to protest the sky-high cost of diesel fuel. The strike is expected to last three days... However, here in the Natural State, the Arkansas Trucking Association issued a press release in advance of the strike: “The Arkansas Trucking Association does not support a reported strike by Independent truckers that may occur on Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Our organization's board of directors does not endorse any action that might disrupt the delivery of freight or harm the U.S. economy."...

* Canada - Striking is not the answer

Vancouver,BC,Canada -
CKNW(AM980) -Apr, 01 2008, 8:40 AM: -- That from the head of the BC Trucking Association after word that independent truckers in the US are planning to strike to protest high fuel costs... Some independent truckers in the US say they're going to strike to protest high diesel costs... But Paul Landry with the BC Trucking Association says that's not the answer. "We always have a great deal of concern and empathy for trucking companies or owner-operators when faced with rising fuel prices. But really, the only appropriate response is to turn around and recover that rising cost from your customers through either increasing your fuel surcharges or increasing your freight rates."... Landry says he has not heard of any Canadian trucking strikes planned in solidarity with striking American truckers...
