* Truck drivers slow down with the economy

Portland,OR,USA -KGW, by WAYNE HAVRELLY -March 24, 2008: -- As our nation's economy slows down, so are truckers in their big rigs... Driving under the posted speed limit can save fuel and with diesel prices now averaging more than 4 dollars a gallon, truckers everywhere are slowing down... Many have no choice... That's because many trucking companies are now putting governors on trucks that restrict them to a maximum speed of 60 miles per hour... They believe big oil companies are taking advantage of the situation... Independent owner operators say the situation is so bad, they are planning a 3 day nationwide strike for the first week of April...

And drivers say many owner/operator truckers are being forced to stop driving... So one truck driver, from Vandergrift, says he has now organized a one-day protest today against the high diesel prices... * Trucker's Strike Looming: Fuel Cost Protest in April, Real or Hoax?

USA -FREIGHT TEAMSTERS, by 1Teamster -March 24, 2008: -- A trucker's strike may be looming on the horizon. Many independent over the road truck drivers are fed up with rising fuel and insurance costs and are looking into organizing and trying to join together to take rigs off the road and that would mean shortages at supermarkets, convenience stores and if it was carried out to the extreme, eventually at every retail outlet in America. Everything that gets delivered to a retail store in your city or town is eventually delivered by a truck, and if it were highly organized a strike could paralyze the economy... But is real or a hoax?... According to a report from the Quad City Times, there are roughly 1,000 truckers now saying that they will strike on April 1, and it appears not to be an April Fool's Day joke despite the day the strike will reportedly begin... It seems a bit under organized at this point and many truckers interviewed by the paper had not heard of the looming strike, but some independent drivers seem to suggest they would join in. Dan Little, the organizer says he knows that the strike can't bring down the price of Diesel (over $4.00 per gallon in many states) but he wants help to try and bring attention to the problems truckers are now facing and he hopes to highlight the need to bring down insurance costs and he would like the government to suspend the tax on Diesel fuel to help the truck driver's that are going broke because of rising prices...

* STRIKE - Truckers may not be in for long haul - Owner-operators might park today

Kirkersville,OH,USA -The Columbus Dispacht, by Josh Jarman -March 24, 2008: -- Today could be the day the trucks stop rolling... Across the nation, on citizens band channels, independent truckers are talking about parking their rigs today and letting their countrymen know how much it needs them. If not today, some say, then one day next week, or the next, but with diesel fuel hovering near $4 a gallon, someday soon... Jones said the idea of a national trucking boycott gets almost constant discussion on his program, a sort of national CB chat where hundreds of truckers a day call in to express their opinions... More often than not, he said, that topic is the cost of diesel... Although he has heard today as one of the likely dates for a possible halt to all trucking by owner-operators -- drivers who own their own vehicles and contract for their services -- he's heard just as much talk about April 1 or April 3...
