DRIVER'S STORY * USA - Riding with Wal-Mart truck driver Dave Towne
Mt. Pleasant,IA,USA -The Mt. Pleasant News, by Mira Cash-Davis -7 Jan 2008: -- There are over three million truck drivers in the U.S., Wal-Mart trucker Dave Towne recalled hearing at the National Truck Driving Championships last August in Minneapolis... Towne can talk about trucking. He's been driving a truck for 35 years, the last 21 of those for Wal-Mart. There, he has earned the reputation as one of the safest drivers at a company that has won "Safest Private Fleet" nationally eight out of the last 10 years... As in any other driving day, Towne inspects his semi-tractor before getting into it, checking the tires for proper inflation, checking the mirrors and checking the body for signs of damage, he was on a run this day to haul items from the Mt. Pleasant warehouse to Maquoketa and this Mt. Pleasant News reporter rode along... He backs his tractor under a trailer until it latches. He hooks up three cables from his tractor to the trailer, one of which is electrical. Once securely connected, he cranks up the dollies on either side of the trailer... There is a green tag on the back of his vehicle, telling him his vehicle has been inspected. A printed tag under that needs to match his manifest in regards to how much load he's taking and where he's heading that day... (Photo: Dave Towne doing paperwork in Maquoketa. He’s logged in 2.5 million miles while driving for Wal-Mart over the pat 21 years)
