REPORT * UK - Trunk roads more efficient than rail
London,UK -Motor Transport, by Chris Tindall -6 December 2007: -- A report urging the government to build 600km of roads every year to keep up with traffic increases also claims that trunk roads are more efficient for freight movements than rail... The RAC Foundation's Roads and Reality report states that the government has drastically underestimated the amount and scale of road building projects needed to ease congestion... It also brands as a myth the claim that railways are more efficient users of space than main roads. It says: "Trunk roads occupy less than twice as much space as railways, but carry over five times as much freight traffic as the railways"...
