ILLEGAL FUEL * UK - As diesel tops £1 a litre, drivers turn to

Fuel shortages and petrol price hikes have led to an increase in the number of motorists running their cars illegally on agricultural fuel

Norwich,UK -EDP24, by HAYLEY MACE -6 November 2007: -- ... Customs officials revealed last night... As prices hit £1 a litre on many of the region's forecourts, there was a warning that more and more drivers are turning to cheaper red diesel, which can cost up to 66p a litre less than standard diesel... The average price for unleaded petrol on November 1 was 98.98p per litre, with diesel at 101.87p per litre and red diesel costing about 35p a litre... Red diesel works in the same way as normal diesel but it is chemically dyed with a red colouring to make it identifiable because it is taxed at a lower rate and only intended for use in agricultural vehicles... With diesel prices in East Anglia among the highest in the UK, some drivers are using cheaper fuel illegally. HM Revenue and Customs is concerned that the growing trend could cost taxpayers more than £300m a year...
