TRUCKERS' HEALTH * Canada - Drowsy drivers are road danger

Poll finds 37% of people have fallen asleep at the wheel
Nanaimo,Cowichan,BC,Canada -Daily News, by Robert Barron -November 6, 2007: -- Driving while drowsy can be every bit as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs... A recent poll conducted by Sleep in America showed 37% of respondents reported they had fallen asleep while driving in the past year. And an incredible 47% of long-distance truck drivers in the survey indicated they had fallen asleep while driving... Add that to the fact darkness arrives earlier with the clocks pushed back an hour last weekend and you have a recipe for disaster... Heath Carpentier, a truck driving instructor at Nanaimo's Cowichan School of Motoring, said it comes as no shock to him that so many drivers get drowsy behind the wheel...
