* UK - Local Road Pricing Must Show Clear Benefit

London,UK -TNN, by Gerald Woodgate -Oct 2007: -- The Freight Transport Association has told the Government that road pricing schemes proposed by local authorities should make clear the benefits they will bring, and show evidence approved by an impartial auditor before being given the go-ahead... The comments came as FTA responded to the Department for Transport’s consultation on the Local Transport Bill, which refines existing powers for local authorities to set up local road pricing schemes...

London,UK -The Road Transport -15 Oct 2007: -- The big news of the day is the apparent abandonment of the national road pricing scheme. According to today’s Daily Telegraph: “The retreat will be signalled by the Department for Transport this week in response to a back bench committee's report into the draft Local Transport Bill”... The Telegraph is calling this a U-turn and says: ”The department will add: 'We agree that there are congestion problems on parts of the strategic road network, but 88 per cent of congestion is in urban areas'. Therefore it is sensible to prioritise the assessment of road pricing in these areas"...
