The good news is the volume of freight was up 8 percent in 2006 over the prior year and 30 percent over three years... The bad news is transportation costs rose 9.4 percent over 2005 due to higher interest rates, fuel costs and the need to cover greater distances... Truck tonnage was down 1 percent for the first time in many years, due to the downward spiral in housing and automobile sectors...
