ROLLING ON * USA ROADS - Drug trade drives fear of Mexico trucks
Gonzales made history Sunday by driving the first Mexican truck into the U.S. beyond the 25-mile border zone under the North American Free Trade Agreement
Tucson,AZ,USA-The Tucson Citizen, by ELIZABETH "BJAY" WOOLLEY -14 Sept 2007: -- Luis Gonzales seems like a nice guy. The 39-year-old truck driver, married for 13 years with two daughters, likes discovering new people and places, and he enjoys the adventure of the open road... In the wee hours, this adventure-seeking truck driver for Mexican-based Transportes Olympic crossed the border at Laredo, headed for North Carolina... Company owner Fernando Paez is reported to have said, "We're only taking one truck just in case the Teamsters burn one of them. Hopefully, we won't have any trouble"... I wonder if that caused Gonzales' trepidation gauge to register in the red zone... He shared the road with motorists who did not want him there. According to a poll on TheTrucker.com, 87.9 percent of truckers who responded thought he was a threat to their very livelihood... (Photo: First mexican's truck certification in USA
