HOS DEBATE * USA - DOT expert tells truckers to remember safety is behind rules of the road
Truck drivers maneuvering their big rigs down the highway must not only navigate the road but a labyrinth of federal regulations... and ... "the big thing is hours of service"...
Midland,TX,USA -MyWestTexas/Midland Reporter-Telegram, by Mella McEwen -2 Sept 2007: -- What is most important to every driver, supervisor and company manager/owner is "Compliance with every Department of Transportation regulation," said Steve Hart, a noted specialist who presented a two-day seminar sponsored by LoneStar USA Safety & Training... He told the participants in the seminar, "I worry more about getting sued than I do about the DOT. The DOT will fine you a few thousand dollars; juries will award millions. We live in a very litigious society today"... While there has been concern about drug and alcohol abuse, Hart said the main focus remains hours of service and ensuring sleepy drivers aren't behind the wheel of 80,000 pound trucks... Again, he said, "the big thing is hours of service"... "And his boss told him if he didn't like it, he could leave," Hart recounted with barely disguised disgust. "I've been hearing these stories since 1981 and the driver needs protection. It's not fair to ask the driver to risk his life to make me a dollar. That's inhumane"...
