* Trucking Stocks Ride Rocky Road This Summer
AR,USA -The NorthWest Arkansas, by John L. Moore -September 1, 2007: -- Most trucking companies said 2007 freight volumes would be weak until the second half of the year. And while most experts agree that the trucking industry is relatively sound, they aren't unanimous as to whether freight volumes will improve before year's end... The trucking industry is a good barometer of the "goods" economy, said Bob Costello, chief economist for the American Trucking Association. In that respect, the trucking industry downturn appears to have predicted the stock market slide over fears the economy would tank as tighter credit conditions hamper financial growth and housing sales and prices fall...
Costello and Lane Kidd, president of Arkansas Trucking Association, are hoping for a better second half of the year, but neither is sure how much better... Demand was so high two years ago that a lot of trucking capacity was added to keep up, said Jim Crowell, managing director of the Supply Chain Management Research Center at the University of Arkansas. That demand let up last year resulting in more trucks than business... The long-term fundamentals of the economy and the strength of local transportation companies look good, however, Crowell said.
