* July report: Class 8 slump continues; U.S. totals down 55%
USA -The Trucker -10 August 2007: -- For the second month in a row, sales of Class 8 trucks have fallen by more than half compared to last year. According to figures published today by Ward’s Automotive, Class 8 sales in July totaled 10,084 trucks in the United States, compared to 22,336 in July, 2006, a decline of 54.9 percent... In the year so far, Class 8 sales are off by 40.1 percent, totaling 97,359 through July compared to 162,545 in 2006... Freightliner’s July total of 2,219 units paced the OEMs in volume, edging out International’s 2,111 units. Both companies took hits in the order book compared to the same month a year ago, with Freightliner down 65 percent, while International was slightly better than the industry average, down 46.1 percent. The top manufacturers did manage to show improvement from the previous month, each gaining more than 8 percent while the industry otherwise lost ground between June and July at a 13 percent pace... Freightliner commands a market share of 27.4 percent, with International holding 18.3 percent of the Class 8 total sales in the U.S... For OEMs looking for a silver lining in the industry slump, Sterling Trucks — with sales of 8,296 units in 2007 — is down by a comparatively modest 14 percent. Sterling has seen its market share surge from 5.94 percent a year ago to 8.52 percent as of July’s totals. Kenworth likewise has improved its share, currently holding 12.4 percent of the Class 8 market, an increase of 114 basis points from this time in 2006.
