* USA - Sleep Apnea Program fully available, pulmonary firm says
Precision Pulmonary Diagnostics, creators of a sleep apnea detection and treatment program targeted toward the commercial vehicle industry, today announced full availability of its comprehensive solution for enhancing truck driver safety and lowering health care costs for motor carriers

The announcement follows completion of nearly three years of design and testing of Precision Pulmonary's patent-pending online screening tool and sleep apnea detection and treatment program... In conjunction with Schneider National, a provider of truckload, logistics and intermodal services, Dr. Mark Berger, president of Precision Pulmonary, said that all necessary aspects of research and development were covered... According to Angela Fish, Schneider National director of benefits, post treatment for the 778 drivers that were found to have sleep apnea and treated for it, Schneider National is realizing:
A savings of $500-$708 in health care costs per treated driver per month
A 30 percent reduction in accident frequency due to eliminating driver fatigue
A 1.9 times improvement in driver retention


* USA - Drivers at risk of skin cancer
USA -Road Transport (UK), by Chris Tindall -22 August 2007: -- LGV drivers may be exposing themselves to an increased risk of skin cancer during the summer months, according to research which found harmful rays penetrate windows... An American study claims there is a correlation between more time spent driving and a higher incidence of skin cancers on the side of the body most exposed to sunlight. In the US this is the left-hand side, as opposed to the right-hand side in the UK...
Speaking at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dr Scott Fosko says: "Our initial data shows that those individuals under age 70 who consistently spent the most time per week driving a car were more likely to develop left-sided skin cancers. We're also finding that all drivers who occasionally drive with the windows open had a higher incidence of left-sided skin cancers"...
