* The search is on for road dollars in Iowa
IO,USA - The Des Moines Register/ Land Line Magazine -August 20, 2007: -- With the increased urgency many states have to address concerns about bridge conditions after the deadly Minneapolis bridge collapse earlier this month, key legislative leaders in Iowa are re-examining a shortfall in construction funds... The Iowa Department of Transportation revealed that state, city and county roads are staring at a $28 billion shortfall for road and bridge work during the next two decades... Officials with the Iowa DOT say the state needs $200 million more per year to keep up with transportation needs... The added revenue would amount to an extra 9 cents per gallon collected on the state’s fuel taxes. Other options include boosting vehicle registration and driver’s license fees and stiffer fines for overweight trucks... To make matters worse, funding aid from the federal government is cloudy. The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced it may cut funding to states...

* Big Dig costs could outgrow scheduled toll increases
Boston,MA,-August 20, 2007: -- Toll increases within the Massachusetts Turnpike system could outgrow what officials outlined in plans for the costly Big Dig project. The Big Dig, also known as the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, has cost $14.6 billion so far and the need to repair water leaks could push the cost up even further... A Massachusetts Turnpike Commission spokesman said tolls are scheduled to increase in January 2008, but officials are still trying to determine the amount... Specific toll increases for specific interchanges have not been determined, Turnpike spokesman Mac Daniel told Land Line...

* TxDOT spends millions to promote Trans-Texas Corridor
TX,USA -The Houston Chronicle/Land Line Magazine, by Reed Black -August 21, 2007: -- Some state lawmakers in Texas are not too happy about the money the state DOT is spending to promote the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor... Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation plan to spend between $7 million and $9 million on a TV, radio and billboard campaign with the slogan, “Keep Texas Moving"... The proposed multi-billion-dollar Trans-Texas Corridor would be a series of toll roads built and operated by private investors... Texas Gov. Rick Perry and the state DOT are pushing hard to get the massive project going. But lawmakers placed a moratorium on a number of toll road construction projects until they have more time to study it...
