BRIBERY * USA - Truckers say feds are bribing New York, other cities with toll grants
A move by the U.S. DOT to award grants to cities wishing to implement tolls to reduce congestion is nothing short of bribery, particularly in New York, an official with the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association said this week

An independent study done previously by OOIDA Legislative Affairs Specialist Rene Hill confirmed at least 35 percent of the fuel tax dollars collected for roads and bridges are spent on things like bike paths, museums and other earmarked projects such as lighthouse maintenance...

U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters this week confirmed that a big chunk of fuel tax dollars end up paying for things other than roads and bridges... In an interview on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS, Peters said “I think Americans would be shocked to learn that only about 60 percent of the (fuel) tax they pay today actually goes to highway and bridge construction”... Peters said in the last highway bill, about $24 billion went to special, “earmarked” projects, and for things such as museums, bike paths and the maintenance of lighthouses...
